Day Trip to Toledo

September 12, 2012

After visiting Madrid for a few days, my study abroad program spent a day in Toledo–the original capital of Spain! In the short time that I was there I dined at some of the best spots I’ve experienced yet. Here are a few snapshots of the beautiful city and it’s gourmet eats.

This view was spectacular. The city is charming from far away, but the streets and buildings of Toledo have so much character up close. It’s evident in every narrow, winding and cobblestone-filled-passageway you will find.

When one of my study abroad directors found out I write a food blog, he insisted that I visit the cafe/bar called “Farolito.” The Cafe con Leche (espresso and milk) was amazing. I love how the coffees are all served in tiny tazas or mugs.

The man who made my Cafe con Leche told me the secret to great coffee is the espresso machine. The beans he uses are from Colombia and are roasted near Toledo. Espresso in Spain truly serves as both a delicious treat and an afternoon pick-me-up…everyone stays up so late and gets up early!

Grilled veggies with truffle oil were a hit at the restaurant called “La Abadia.” My friends and I ate downstairs in the basement made of a dome of bricks. The dramatic lighting made for a sophisticated ambiance, too.

I have become a connoisseur of paella and sangria. Every place makes it a little different, but the essential thing for both is freshness. Fresh fruit (apples, lemons, oranges) in sangria and fresh seafood/shellfish in the paella!

I’ll catch you up on my new home city, Sevilla soon. I am traveling to Ibiza this weekend to enjoy the end of summer weather at the playa (beach)! Cheers and besitos from Espana.

Love food, love self, love life.

You are so right about the paella, fresh seafood and another hint of originality is the saffron spice. I also make it with a beer. Ans the sangria,,,,yes fresh fruit al the way. Disfruta la comida y la cultura…es una belleza! Mis abuelos son de la Coruña, al norte de España and I spent a month there when I was 17 so I can imagine you are en el paraiso! Cariños y besitos….Conchi
