This week I experienced my first birthday party in Spain for my host-sister’s boyfriend, Pablo! It was definitely my kind of party because it included great food, great company and fun music.
My host-sister was planning the surprise party all week and enlisted her mom to make some of the most delicious Spanish foods. Nati (my host-mom) made the biggest Spanish tortilla I’ve ever seen! She said she only used 8 eggs, but I would’ve guessed about 20. I can’t wait to learn the art of making fluffy and flavorful Spanish tortillas.
The birthday party crew from left to right: My roommate Joanna, my host-sister Marta, my host-sister’s boyfriend Pablo, me, and my host-brother Jose!
My host mom also made a flan/tart/cake for Pablo that was scrumptious. She soaked sweet crackers (like graham crackers) in a combo of milk and liquor, then layered them with a flan-like custard. After about 8 layers, she topped the tart with a chocolate pudding icing and marshmallows.
The texture was so smooth and creamy. Flan is typically paired with caramel, but I loved the combination of custard and chocolate. My host-brother’s birthday is in November and I really hope she makes this again!
I loved how the birthday party was simple and centered around great food. It was a great reminder to enjoy the simple things in life and it was a great opportunity to get to know my host family even better. Have a great rest of your week!
Love food, love self, love life.
