Two Food Stories

This semester I have had the privilege of taking The Craft of Storytelling class with former CNN anchor, Aaron Brown. Aaron has become one of my mentors and I have learned so many lessons over the past 13 weeks with him. In this journalism class, we students break into small groups and cover in-depth stories.

For our class’ first set of stories, the general topic was food. I was obviously thrilled about this assignment because food is such a big part of my life. My group and I took the angle of restaurants and spent time at two restaurants in the valley. Filming in the kitchen was one of my favorite memories. I thrived on the chaos and adrenaline in the kitchen and found a new respect for those who work in the restaurant industry.

Below you can watch the finished product. We spent many hours filming, writing and editing, but the end result was worth it. Hopefully you will look at the next restaurant you visit with a new appreciation.

Have you ever thought about how far your food travels to be on your plate? Another group in my class posed that question. They took a challenge to make a meal only from food produced within 50 miles of downtown Phoenix and then documented it. After watching, I now I think twice about the ingredients I purchase.

It was a great experience working with such talented students and I hope to work on more food-related stories like this in the next semester. What a blessing to be able to combine two of my passions, food and journalism, into one package.
